Hauntingly Beautiful New Works by Kari-Lise

by
Garden Ghost

Fine Artist Kari-Lise is a painter I find joy in following online, and knew when I saw her in-process work of Garden Ghost on Instagram @karilise that this was a piece for sharing.
Traditional techniques and practices underpin her contemporary, slightly surreal compositions. The delicate ghostly flourishes, seen above here in "Garden Ghost" are a nod to traditional Norwegian Rosemaling folk art, but overlaid in a way that might remind us of opaque digital painting design and layering.

Something about the combination of Kari-Lise's rich definition of her figures and strong colour choices, while still achieving a very airy or ethereal sense of atmospheric weightlessness, makes her pieces stand out to me.

Kari-Lise will be participating in some upcoming shows to keep an eye out for; "PoP Femme" for Pop Gallery in Santa Fe May 3rd, as well as closer to home in "Tentacle Show" at Ltd. Gallery in Seattle for May 4th.

Find more of Kari-Lise's work on her website, Tumblr, Facebook, IG @karilise or Twitter @KariLiseA or inquire at karilise.alexander@gmail.com

Frank Kozik is DEAD

by

So...Frank isn't really dead but this big ass (13") vinyl bust gives us a good idea of what that might look like. Designed by Kevin Gosselin, blessed by Kozik himself, this is a must for collectors of giant busts of Frank Kozik (which should be everyone).

In addition to the busts themselves, you can also get some boss stickers and the two colors available through the Kickstarter will never be made available through any other channel.  So pony up ya' jerks, let's get this one made!

Amazing customs from Timbone

by
Timbone is one of the best sculptors I know in the scene. His work looks so clean and his paints are top notch. Just spotted these two customs on Deviantart and I was amazed by the quality again of these pieces. The Steampunk GizomoDuck is sculpted from scratch!! AMAZING WORK!

Sculpted from scratch out of super sculpey firm, and plastic rod and tube. Painted with acrylic paint. He stands about 9 inches tall.
Steampunk GizmoDuck (9 inch)

This is the piece I did for the Game On! show at 1AM gallery in San Francisco. Will be on display at the end of March. Made with super sculpey firm, styrene sheet, and acrylic paint. Stands about 3" tall.

Mega-Hic!-Man for GAME ON Exhibition

by
Have to say...stunning piece from Igor Ventura for the GAME ON Exhibition. I reckon that we will see some more great stuff of customizers soon. Awesome line up for this show.

Mega man's ability to gain his defeated enemies' powers isn't always welcome. What would happen if he accidentally shot a booze-loving foe? Well, Mega-Hic!-Man is here! Armed with his XXX super alcohol-sprinkler cannon, his enemies won't be match for him... unless his double-vision gets in the way! Mega-Hic!-Man is part of GAME ON, 1:AM's next group exhibition, an art show guided by the video game characters that molded us in our formative years through today.
Characters like Zelda, Pac Man, Bowser, Link, Mario, Contra, Dig Dug, M. Bison, and Metroid are a few examples of of the many that exist. Each of the pieces should approach a character as a reboot, giving it a twist.

3 New Resin Dye Kits Available in Monster Kolor Store

by
I really can't keep up anymore. Monster Kolor has released 3 new Resin Dye kits based on some of their most popular paint kits: Vividtone (pink, yellow & orange), Shades of Grey (3 shades of grey) and Shades of War (Olive Drab, Desert Camo Tan & Military Brown).
3 great new ways to cast your resin figures in colors so bright and deep that you don't even have to paint the figures... and that means less time spent and therefore more money for you as an artist. I'm always pushing the artists to ramp up production, produce faster and smarter so you can begin making more than minimum wage for your work! Click the link below:

Let me start with a confession.  I have never bought any of Velocitron's releases before.  They just didn't do it for me...and then the Monsters From the Island show came along at Clutter Gallery and the Pocket Idol series.  BOOM!  They got me.

- Amazing price ($7.50 a piece!)
- H.P. Lovecraft tie in

A perfect storm of stuff I love.  As soon as my lottery number got called and I snagged all of them.  There are still sets available (last time I checked anyway) so do yourself a favor and grab them while you can!

'Codename Blanka' by Sekure D

by
Amazing piece again...

Hey guys, this is my custom 'Codename Blanka' for the upcoming 'Game On' exhibition at 1AM SF on March 22nd. I really tried to go a bit out of my comfort zone on this one, obviously the colors are different for me but there is also a bit more sculpting than I have done on my last few pieces. Hope you like him! He stands a little over 6" and is based by a collection of pieces from different MUNNYWORLD characters.

Battle Star Astronauts by Bash Projects

by
Jups I dig this guys work.....

Battle Star Astronauts are the toughest and baddest mother fuckers in the universe. If there is trouble somewhere in the universe that no one can fix... call the Battle Star Astronauts! Mike is from the planet Freesnutsoff. The planet is so cold that everything on that planet is ice-cold blue. Mike once destroyed half the planet after he had his balls frozen to the ground. He had to break them loose with his bare hands, almost taking apart the entire planet. Lima is from the planet Gigantula. He is one of the smallest creatures from that planet but he is so bad-ass that he was born with just one eye... He didn't need a second one! Charlie is the leader of the group and comes from the planet Fluffyhappyland. He lost his left eye during an epic pin-pong match... - Bash Projects

Shipping March 20th are two colorful t-shirts from one of the more prolific designer toy customizers in Mexico, Frank Mysterio. Frank created this exclusively for outsmART and we are thrilled to offer it to the world as this limited edition t-shirt. Also shipping March 20th and only $20.00, this design will be screen printed on black ultra cotton tees for both men and women.

Comic Droid Series by Fuller

by
James Fuller, of Fuller Designs, showed a little teaser of a 1/1 Comic Droid Android series that he will be releasing next month, exclusively through Vinyl Riot. The mockup shows 5 characters designed on Android figures, all of which are from the Marvel X-Men series. Gambit has always been a favorite character of mine and I can't wait to see the final product of the whole set. I imagine that even the packaging for this set will be great, as Fuller likes to create his customs as a complete package. Hopefully, Fuller will create more characters from the Marvel Universe in the future.

Based on the mock-up, it seems that the series is going to be available on 4/27/13, sold as a set, exclusively through Vinyl Riot. Be sure to keep an eye out for more release information in the coming weeks.

Shapeways API release...what does that mean?

by
https://www.mixeeme.com/

Shapeways released their API (full article) and it's kind of a big deal.  Here's a quick run down of why that is:
  • First, an API (Application Programming Interface) is basically a piece of computer code that lets two programs talk to each other in a way that both of them understand.
  • Using the Shapeways API you could make an app, program or website that people can use to send things to Shapeways (without having to go through their site) and then it gets made and shows up on their doorstep!  AMAZING!
So what does that mean in the real world terms?  Well, uh, money for one.  There are about 8,000 Shapeways Shop owners and they made about $500,000 in profits last year.  Now that is for shops that are on the Shapeways Shop site which is a good place to start but...what if you made a site where people could (for example) make custom little dudes and dudettes and have them appear in the mail a few weeks later?

Someone already answered that question and I think it is a great case study for some of the possibilities that the wide release of this API opens up.

Mixee Me was started by some Yalies (full disclosure, I do know one of them personally - Hi Nancy!) and in essence, the site lets you mix and match parts, then get it printed and mailed to you.  This is objectively awesome and the interface that they have come up with (using the Shapeways API) is dead simple but allows a tremendous amount of flexibility by giving you the option of uploading designs.

That is the "now".  My brain is still spinning with the immediate future possibilities for toys that are not only bigger (or smaller), better, faster, stronger, cheaper but custom, exactly what you want and when you want it!  What do you think?

This article only really scratched the surface of what is going on in this realm so stay tuned for more articles on this (and tangentially related) subjects coming soon!

Vincent the Red Eye by Respect

by
Have to say impressive work. Love this first Dunny from Respect...

This is my 1st completed dunny and a second addition to a set of customs I am working on. The customs are a crew called "Bear Knuckle", the first was a gift for my girlfriend.

This is Vincent the Red Eye, an aggressive bastard, mentor and leader of the crew. His past is muddy and filled with blood, slowly gathering and assembling the crew he dubbed as Bear Knuckle. The animals are gathering, preparing for something that we don't know about yet. Only he knows what the end result is, and he's not telling.

I'm in the middle of working on 3 more of these for anyone looking to purchase, they will be available for $65. Each toy will come with custom packaging and a 3" Bear Knuckle sticker, signifying a membership into the crew.
